How the World Poker Rank is calculated
Tournament Event Qualification
The first step in calculating an individual's World Poker Rank is which tournaments will be included for the calculation. We will include tournaments that:
- Have at least a $100 buy-in
- Are "Open" events - Events must be open to all individuals to buy in and play. Invite-only, Seniors-only, Casino employees-only, and Ladies-only events do not count although the results of these events will be included in the database for informational purposes only
- Are "Live" events - Events that take place online do not count
These are the only criteria. This way, the World Poker Rank is open to all individuals in the world, regardless of where they live. If the tournament is in one's local cardroom, is in Europe, or is a major event in Las Vegas, that event will qualify for ranking points if it meets the above three criteria.
WPR Points Calculation
Now that we know which tournaments will be included, we can calculate one's WPR points for that event.
There are three criteria when calculating points:
- Amount of the buy-in
- Number of entrants in the event
- Place finished in the event. All paid places will receive points.
WPR points are calculated by multiplying the point factors of the three criteria:
WPR points = Buy-in Factor * Entry Factor * Place Factor
Buy-in Factor is calculated from the following table:
| Buy-in |
Buy-in Factor |
| $100 to $299 |
0.5 |
| $300 to $999 |
1 |
| $1000 to $1999 |

3 |
| $5000 to $9999 |
5 |
| $10000 to $19999 |
8 |
| $20000 and higher |

Entry Factor is calculated from the following table:
| Entries |
Entry Factor |
| 1 to 100 |
1.0 |
| 101 to 400 |
Entries / 100 (rounded up to nearest tenth) |
| 401 and higher |

WPR Ranking Points
The player rankings are created from totalling their individual WPR points over the previous 4 years (from the date of the last database update) using the following time-weighted information:
- WPR points in the past 1 year are multiplied by a factor of 1.0
- WPR points 1 to 2 years old are multiplied by a factor of 0.75
- WPR points 2 to 3 years old are multiplied by a factor of 0.5
- WPR points 3 to 4 years old are multiplied by a factor of 0.25
The points for each player are then added together and sorted top to bottom. The player with the highest number of points is the Number 1 player in the world at that time!
