When you ask "Who is Stu Ungar?" many people will say he was a drug addict with a gambling problem, but when you ask the same question to a poker player, they will say he was a legend, a genius with pure talent, the Mozart of cards. Stu "The Kid" Ungar was all of these things and more. He is widely known for being one of the only people to ever win three WSOP main event titles, along with Johnny Moss. He won two back to back in 1980 and 1981, then later in 1997. In addition, Stu has also won three Super Bowl of Poker titles, being the only person to ever have three titles in both. Other then poker, Stu was also the best Gin player ever. He was quoted saying "Some day, I suppose it's possible for someone to be a better No Limit Hold'em player than me. I doubt it, but it could happen. But, I swear to you, I don't see how anyone could ever play gin better than me." These are all the great and wonderful things about Stu Ungar, but there is a darker side to this legend. Evidence of Stu's downfall came early. At the age of fifteen, he dropped out high school after winning 10k from a gin rummy tournament(he didn't lose a single hand at this tournament). He gave a grand to his parents and ended up losing the rest of it on horse races. At this time, Stu was playing Gin for a living and ended up moving to Miami, Florida where the games were higher. Eventually he moved to Las Vegas, beating out the toughest of opponents consistently until all the Gin action dried up. Stu was a natural at many things, which he can credit to his eidetic memory. In fact, he once made a bet for 100k that he could count down the last three decks of cards in a shoe, which he won flawlessly. He was also banned from practically every blackjack game in Las Vegas. Eventually, Stu tried poker and ended up winning the first WSOP main event he was entered in 1980, beating Doyle Brunson heads-up regardless of his lack of experience. Eventually, Stu became a drug addict, doing practically ever drug in the book, particularly cocaine. He also had a gambling problem, he just couldn't stay away from the action. He would be on everything; sports, horses, poker, golf etc. The worst thing about this, was that he would even bet when he had the worst of it, but he just couldn't stay away from the action. He especially loved golf, even though he was a less then par golfer. He would use a tee on every single shot and would make huge bets, regardless of the conditions. It is estimated that Stu has lost several million on the golf course alone. Over the years, he went from being a millionaire to broke at least four times. If he had money, he couldn't keep hold of it and would carelessly gamble it away. In this time, he got married to his ex-wife Madeline and had a daughter Stephanie. In 1997, he came back to the poker table, broke, to play in the WSOP main event after being backed by his friend and poker pro Billy Baxter. He went on to win and split the winnings 50/50 with Billy, but he quickly became broke again. Just over a year later, on November 22nd, 1998, Stu was found dead in a hotel room from a heart condition that developed after years of drug abuse. Stu didn't have a "normal" job his whole life and couldn't put a value on money. To him, it was just a tool required to make bets with. Regardless, Stu was one of the most talented people, and you can't help think what would have been without the drugs and difficulties.
